Airbus aims to sell over 100 large aircraft in China

Forumul Economic Regional Moldova 2024 – Vatra Dornei, 4–6 iulie

The company is in negotiations for a major sale of A330neo planes to China, driven by Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to France, Bloomberg reports. China’s largest airlines are considering purchasing over 200 upgraded A330 models, with delivery schedules still being negotiated, according to Bloomberg’s anonymous sources.

The negotiations highlight the significant gap between Airbus and Boeing in China’s aviation market, amid escalating geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington. China recently halted Boeing imports again, as reported by Agerpres. Meanwhile, Airbus benefits from its local investments in Asia’s largest economy. Airbus declined to comment, while Air China, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines representatives did not immediately respond to Bloomberg’s requests for comment.

A massive order from China would support Airbus’s A330neo order book, a model with weaker sales but featuring modernized wings and engines compared to its older counterpart, the A330. While China is developing its domestic aviation sector with the Comac-produced C919, it currently lacks large twin-aisle planes. Demand for this type of aircraft has increased following the recovery of long-haul travel post-pandemic lows. Previously, Boeing supplied Chinese airlines with hundreds of 777 and 787 Dreamliner models.
