Moldova Recognized by FAO for Excellence in Sustainable Land Management

The Republic of Moldova has received an award from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for implementing effective policies in sustainable management of agricultural land, soil, and water resources.

This recognition highlights the country’s efforts to transform agriculture into a more resilient and environmentally friendly sector amid global climate challenges.

Sustainable Agriculture – A Strategic Direction for the Economy

Agricultural land is one of Moldova’s most valuable economic resources, and the way it is managed directly affects productivity, food security, and economic stability. FAO appreciated that Moldovan authorities have integrated sustainable development principles into agricultural policies, following the organization’s four pillars: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.

Impact on the Agricultural Sector

FAO’s recognition strengthens Moldova’s position as a regional example of best practices in sustainable agriculture. Economically, this distinction may bring concrete benefits:

  • Increased international credibility of the agricultural sector, facilitating foreign investment;
  • Expanded access to markets requiring products certified as sustainably produced;
  • Improved land productivity and reduced losses due to soil degradation or extreme weather conditions.

Implementing sustainable land management practices also reduces production costs and creates a more stable environment for farmers, encouraging the shift from subsistence to competitive and profitable agriculture.

Challenges and Perspectives

Although international recognition confirms the right direction, authorities must continue reforms to consolidate results. Priorities include:

  • Modernizing irrigation infrastructure and preventing soil erosion;
  • Ensuring farmers’ access to training programs and green financing;
  • Creating a coherent legislative framework to stimulate investments in environmentally friendly technologies.

Conclusion

Moldova demonstrates that a strategic approach based on sustainability and efficiency can bring benefits to both the environment and the economy.
