Chernivtsi | Reduced Stocks of Some Food Products Amid Rising Demand and Logistical Challenges

Nearly Empty Shelves Reported in Some Supermarkets in Chernivtsi

In recent days, reduced stocks have been observed on the shelves of some supermarkets in Chernivtsi, while information has emerged on social media about possible shortages of pasta, flour, cereals, eggs, canned goods, salt and sugar. The situation was checked in several stores across the city.

Stable Supply Situation at ATB Stores

At an ATB store in the Hraviton district, shelves stocked with cereals and pasta were well supplied, with no clear indications of product shortages. No significant bulk purchases of the same categories of food products were observed either.

Store representatives said that, at the time of the inspection, the chain had not introduced any restrictions on the quantity of products that could be purchased by an individual customer.

Reduced Stocks at Velmart

A different situation was observed at the Velmart hypermarket, where shelves containing salt, baking soda, pasta and cereals were almost empty.

According to the store’s management, the high number of customers and the purchase of considerable quantities of products on Sunday, 30 August, led to a rapid decline in stocks.

Empty Shelves at METRO, but Additional Goods Available in the Store

Empty spaces were also observed on some shelves containing pasta and other food products at the METRO hypermarket. At the same time, boxes of goods that had not yet been placed on the shelves were located near the sales areas, while some products were stored on pallets.

METRO management stated that there are currently no restrictions on the quantity of products that customers can purchase.

Logistical Challenges and Supply Delays

Iulia Zalischuk, METRO Ukraine’s public relations representative, explained that the company does not disclose detailed information about stock levels for security reasons and to avoid disrupting the operation of its retail outlets.

According to the company, damage to storage infrastructure and disruptions to logistics chains may temporarily cause difficulties in supplying certain products and lead to delivery delays.

Panic Buying Contributes to Temporary Shortages

METRO Ukraine also draws attention to the impact of panic buying. The company says that increased demand for certain products is contributing to temporary shortages amid the recent Russian attacks on several regions of Ukraine.

Currently, approximately 17% of the nearly 16,000 products sold by the chain are unavailable. However, company representatives note that, in many cases, unavailable products can be replaced with alternative products available in stores.

METRO Announces Measures to Restore Stocks

Olena Vdovychenko, General Director of METRO Ukraine, said that the retail chain is making efforts to restore deliveries as quickly as possible and replenish shelves with the necessary products.

Situation Varies from One Retail Chain to Another

The data collected from the stores inspected show that the supply situation in Chernivtsi is not uniform. While some supermarkets are not experiencing significant supply problems, other retail chains are temporarily facing reduced stocks of certain categories of products.

The situation is attributed to a combination of a sudden increase in demand, panic buying and logistical difficulties caused by damage to infrastructure.
