China has launched a giant humanoid robot costing 500,000 euros, intended for industrial interventions and rescue operations
A Chinese robotics company has unveiled a large humanoid robot, controlled by a human operator, capable of walking on two legs and even breaking through walls.
The model, called GD01, is priced at approximately 500,000 euros and resembles the spectacular robots seen in science-fiction films.
A Sci-Fi Dream Turned Into Reality
For generations who grew up watching famous productions such as “Pacific Rim,” “Gundam,” “Alien,” or “Transformers,” the idea of piloting a giant robot has always remained fascinating. Now, that image appears to have become reality.
The Chinese company Unitree Robotics, known for its rapid development of advanced robots, has launched the GD01 model, which it presents as the world’s first transformable mecha robot piloted by a human and ready for mass production.
The Impressive Features of the GD01 Model
The robot stands approximately 2.8 meters tall and features an open cockpit located in the torso area, where the human operator is positioned. It can move in a humanoid upright posture on two legs, but it can also change its configuration to walk on four legs when the terrain becomes difficult.
In the presentation footage, GD01 is even shown breaking through a wall made of concrete blocks, demonstrating its strength and versatility.
High Price and Specialized Uses
Although spectacular, the robot is unlikely to become an accessible means of transportation for the general public anytime soon. Its starting price is 3.9 million yuan, equivalent to nearly 500,000 euros.
According to Unitree, the GD01 is intended for high-value sectors such as industrial operations, rescue missions, and cultural tourism.
Potential Applications in Extreme Situations
Theoretically, such robots could be used in areas affected by natural disasters, collapsed buildings, hazardous industrial platforms, or other environments where conventional vehicles cannot easily reach.
There is also an obvious military potential, even though the manufacturer insists that the robot is a civilian platform and recommends that it be used in a safe and responsible manner.
The Development of Exoskeletons and Humanoid Robots
The robotics industry has been working on similar concepts for many years. Powered exoskeletons are already being used in medicine, logistics, and the defense sector.
Companies such as Sarcos Technology and Robotics Corporation, Hyundai, and Lockheed Martin are developing wearable robotic systems that help increase physical strength and reduce fatigue during demanding activities.
The Global Boom of Humanoid Robots
Humanoid robots are currently experiencing a period of accelerated development, supported by massive global investments. Companies in the United States, China, and Europe are competing to create robots capable of working in factories, warehouses, and, in the long term, even inside homes.
China has included the development of these technologies among its strategic priorities, and Beijing’s latest five-year plan emphasizes rapid advancement in fields located at the frontier of science and technology.
