China Opens the Way to 6G: The “All-Frequency” Chip Set to Revolutionize the Digital Economy
After years of massive investments in 5G technology, the world is preparing for the next major leap in telecommunications: 6G, the sixth generation of wireless networks.
It promises not only spectacular speeds but also a profound transformation of digital infrastructure, with a direct impact on the global economy, industry, healthcare, and transportation, according to TechXplore.
The “All-Frequency” Chip: A Revolutionary Chinese Innovation
Researchers at Peking University and the City University of Hong Kong have developed an innovative chip capable of operating across the entire spectrum required for future 6G networks. Named “all-frequency,” the device can reach data transfer speeds of over 100 gigabits per second (Gbps), roughly 100 times higher than the current 5G average.
Despite its tiny dimensions—11 x 1.7 millimeters—the chip integrates functions that previously required nine separate radio systems. It covers frequencies from 0.5 GHz to 115 GHz, handling both standard microwaves and terahertz waves, which are essential for 6G.
The authors of the study published in Nature emphasize that the system represents “a significant step toward future full-spectrum and omni-scenario wireless networks,” enabling reconfigurable wireless communications along the entire chain, with performance surpassing previously tested photonic technologies.
The Technology Behind the Chip
The innovation lies in miniaturizing the entire wireless system into a single chip made of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), an advanced material used in photonics. The chip processes signals through an electro-optic modulator, converting wireless signals into optical signals. These then pass through optoelectronic oscillators to generate the required radio frequencies. By combining light and electricity, the system produces extremely stable and clean signals, crucial for ultra-fast communications.
In laboratory tests, the chip demonstrated a frequency tuning speed of 6 GHz in just 180 microseconds, significantly outperforming current solutions.
The Economic Impact of 6G
While 5G enabled 4K video streaming and connectivity for smart devices, 6G is set to redefine the digital economy through:
Ultra-fast transfer speeds – hundreds of Gbps, comparable to fiber-optic networks, opening new opportunities for digital commerce, cloud platforms, and multimedia services.
Near-zero latency – essential for autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, and advanced augmented and virtual reality applications.
Integrated artificial intelligence – real-time network management, automatic data traffic optimization, and operational cost reduction.
Expanded frequency spectrum – access to terahertz waves will enable innovations in transportation, healthcare, security, and industry.
Economists highlight that the rollout of 6G will trigger massive investments in digital infrastructure and compatible devices, from smartphones to advanced industrial equipment. It will stimulate job creation in research, development, production, as well as in digital services and AI applications.
When Will 6G Be Available?
Despite the technological breakthroughs, 6G is still in the research phase. Experts estimate that the first commercial networks will appear around 2030. Until then, collaboration among governments, tech companies, and research institutes will be necessary to develop global standards and invest in the required infrastructure.
Conclusion
Once implemented, 6G will make the internet hundreds of times faster and more stable, enabling fully connected smart cities, revolutionary medical applications, and digital services unimaginable today. Economies that adopt this technology early will gain a significant competitive advantage in the digital era.
