China’s Ministry of Commerce announced sanctions on Monday against Boeing and two other defense companies for selling arms to Taiwan, on the day of Taiwan’s president’s inauguration, CNBC reports.

The measure is the latest in a series of sanctions that Beijing has announced in recent years against defense companies for arms sales to Taiwan, an autonomous island that China considers part of its own territory.

China’s Ministry of Commerce placed Boeing’s Defense, Space & Security unit, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, and General Dynamics Land Systems on what is called an “unreliable entity list,” banning their further investments in China, in addition to travel bans for their top leadership.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s new president, vowed to strengthen Taiwan’s security through imports of advanced fighter jets and other technologies, as well as bolstering the domestic defense industry.

Corporate statements indicate that General Dynamics operates half a dozen Gulfstream aircraft and jet service operations in China, which remains heavily reliant on foreign aerospace technology even as it seeks to build its own presence in the field.

The company also assists in the manufacture of the Abrams tank, which Taiwan is purchasing to replace aging equipment intended to deter or withstand an invasion from China.

General Atomics produces the Predator and Reaper drones used by the US military, though it is unclear what weapons the company sells to Taiwan.

In 2022, China announced sanctions against Ted Colbert, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, after the company won a $355 million contract to supply Harpoon missiles to Taiwan.

Taiwan has faced increasing military harassment from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, which regularly flies fighter jets and sails warships near the island.

The likely impact of Beijing’s sanctions on companies like Boeing is unclear. The United States prohibits most arms-related technology sales to China, but some defense contractors also have civilian business in the aerospace and other industries.
