China Tests Revolutionary Safety System for Electric Vehicles: Battery Can Be Ejected in Case of Fire

The China Automotive Collision Repair & Technology Research Center, in collaboration with Joyson Electronics, is testing a safety system for electric vehicles that ejects the battery in case of fire.

The test was conducted on a modified SUV, possibly the iCar 03T model, demonstrating the ability of the over 227 kg battery to be propelled laterally 3–6 meters in less than a second.

Challenges of EV Battery Fires

Battery fires in electric vehicles are rare but extremely difficult to control. Temperatures can reach up to 1,000°C, and flames may reignite even after appearing extinguished. In many cases, interventions require submerging the entire vehicle in water to cool the battery.

Risks and Legal Considerations

While the system significantly reduces the risk to passengers, ejecting a heavy and hot battery can pose hazards to pedestrians, other vehicles, or buildings. Legal considerations about liability in case of accidents also arise.

Economic Implications

Adopting this technology could enhance the competitiveness of EV manufacturers and stimulate growth in the technological and industrial sectors. Moreover, such a system could influence international regulations regarding EV safety.
