Chișinău, a regional engine for economic development and European funding

Chișinău has become today a regional hub for economic cooperation and European integration, hosting the International Forum “European Cross-Border Cooperation.”

Leaders and officials from the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, and Poland, as well as representatives of the European Union, gathered to consolidate a strategic platform for dialogue and cross-border investment.

A central point of the forum was the launch of the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) – a tool that facilitates joint infrastructure projects, local development initiatives, and access to European funds. Through the EGTC, local and regional authorities will be able to implement strategic initiatives that stimulate economic growth, modernize public services, and align regulations with European standards.

MEP Eugen Tomac reaffirmed the European Parliament’s support for the Chișinău initiative, highlighting the importance of this tool in accelerating European integration and mobilizing resources for local development projects. “This tool gives you the opportunity to access European funding and expertise, and I commit to being an active partner in the implementation process,” Tomac said.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Moldova, Păun Rohovei, emphasized that the forum demonstrates regional unity and commitment to sustainable economic development. “Through cross-border cooperation, we can build a prosperous and democratic future, attract investments, and create better conditions for our citizens,” Rohovei stated.

President Maia Sandu highlighted the importance of turning borders into bridges of development and the role of European integration in stimulating investments and economic growth. “Only through regional collaboration can we attract significant investments and promote sustainable development. The experience of Romania and Poland shows that EU accession generates engines of economic growth and pillars of regional stability,” Sandu said.

The forum gathered over 200 local authorities from Moldova, more than 50 mayors and county council presidents from Romania, and delegations from Ukraine and Poland. Discussions focused on best practices in accessing European funds, modernizing infrastructure, encouraging private investment, and sustainable local development.

Through this event, Chișinău asserts itself as a regional pole for investment attraction and strengthening cross-border economic cooperation, providing the necessary framework for joint projects and faster integration into the European economy.
