From September 5-6, 2024, Energy Minister Victor Parlicov is on an official visit to Greece, where he is attending the fourth edition of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit, organized by Economist Impact Events
This major event brings together government officials, experts, and business leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the energy and geopolitical sectors of Southeast Europe.
A key focus of the discussions will be the strategic supply routes for natural gas, which are essential for ensuring the energy security of the Republic of Moldova. Minister Victor Parlicov will deliver a speech during the session dedicated to the strategic role of the Port of Alexandroupoli in Greece. This port is becoming increasingly important as a strategic hub for the transportation of natural gas to Central and Eastern Europe. Its role in diversifying energy supply sources is critical for reducing dependence on traditional sources and increasing energy security for countries like Moldova.
In addition to his participation in the summit sessions, Minister Parlicov will hold bilateral meetings with high-ranking officials from Greece, including Theodoros Skylakakis, Minister of Environment and Energy, and Alexandra Sdoukou, Deputy Minister. He will also engage in discussions with Makis Voridis, Minister of State for Greece, and George Tsunis, the United States Ambassador to Greece, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in the energy sector. Other significant meetings include talks with Martin Schulz, President of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and Asterios Tsoukalas, Secretary General of the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB).
The Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit, known for its holistic approach to regional issues, will feature extensive discussions on the development of new energy corridors, the strengthening of natural gas and energy infrastructure in Southeast Europe, and the transition to green energy sources. Other key topics include decarbonization and investments in innovative technologies, which are crucial for ensuring a sustainable future in the energy sector.
Moldova’s participation in this summit provides an opportunity to strengthen strategic partnerships in the energy sector and explore new solutions for diversifying natural gas supplies. This is especially important in the context of regional geopolitical tensions and the need to secure a stable and reliable energy supply.
