Inauguration of the Ungheni Perinatal Center: A 4 million lei investment transforming the local economy and regional healthcare
Yesterday, August 6, the official inauguration of the Perinatal Center in Ungheni took place, marking a significant achievement that not only enhances health services for mothers and newborns but also has important economic implications for the region.
The project, with a total value of over 4 million lei, was made possible thanks to the collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Government of the United Kingdom, and other international institutions, Radio Chișinău reports.
Strategic Investments in Health and Economic Impact
The renovation and modernization of the Ungheni Perinatal Center reflect a strategic investment in the region’s health infrastructure. The works included the modernization of delivery rooms, the intensive care unit, the post-operative recovery room for women, and other essential departments, equipping them with state-of-the-art technology. These improvements will not only enhance the quality of medical services but will also have a considerable economic impact on the local economy.
Firstly, the investment brings a direct economic boost through job creation. The renovation and modernization works involved hiring local personnel and purchasing construction materials, thus contributing to the regional economy. In the long term, the improved operation of the center will create a consistent demand for qualified medical staff and support local businesses through the procurement of goods and services.
Impact on Medical Tourism and Attracting Investors
The modernization of the perinatal center not only improves services for the region’s residents but also contributes to the development of medical tourism. With its new, modern healthcare facilities, Ungheni can attract patients from other regions of the country and even from abroad, which may lead to an increase in demand for healthcare services and additional economic development. This could also attract investors interested in the medical sector and other business opportunities in the region.
Community Benefits and Project Sustainability
In addition to the economic impact, the modernization of the perinatal center will bring considerable benefits to the community. Improved quality medical services will reduce long-term costs associated with emergency treatments and medical complications, thus improving the overall health of the population and reducing the economic burden on the healthcare system.
The Minister of Health, Ala Nemerenco, emphasized the importance of investments in healthcare infrastructure, noting that such projects are essential for sustainable economic development. “Investments in perinatal centers not only improve the quality of life but also contribute to local and regional economic development,” said Nemerenco.
In the context of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, UNFPA and international partners have provided significant support, contributing not only to the improvement of health services but also to strengthening the local economy through infrastructure projects. Over the past two years, the UN fund has facilitated the modernization of 12 other perinatal centers and the delivery of 29 ambulances, highlighting its commitment to the economic and social development of regions in need.
Conclusion
The inauguration of the Ungheni Perinatal Center represents not only an enhancement of health services but also a strategic economic investment. By stimulating the local economy, creating jobs, and attracting investors, this project demonstrates how investments in healthcare infrastructure can have significant positive effects on regional economic development.
