Klaus Iohannis at the European Council Meeting: European support for Moldova must be provided through all necessary means, on economic, financial, and security levels

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis participated on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in the European Council meeting held in Brussels, Belgium. The main topics on the agenda included the situation in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, the competitiveness of the European Union, and the management of migration challenges.

Additionally, the European leaders discussed matters concerning Moldova, Georgia, the support for the multilateral system and the rules-based international order, the rising energy prices, as well as other issues related to the EU’s external relations, according to a statement from Romania’s Presidential Administration.

President Klaus Iohannis welcomed the leaders’ decision to uphold the commitments made by the EU within the G7 framework, particularly in providing financial loans to Ukraine. With the approaching winter, President Iohannis emphasized the need to support both Ukraine and Moldova in the energy sector, including by advancing the interconnectivity of these two countries with the European Union.

The European Council reaffirmed its firm support for Moldova’s European path and its progress toward reforms and stability. Furthermore, the Council reiterated its support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The President of Romania welcomed the leaders’ decision to honor the EU’s commitment within the G7 to provide financial loans to Ukraine. In light of the approaching winter, President Klaus Iohannis sounded the alarm regarding the need to support both Ukraine and Moldova in the energy sector, including by advancing the interconnectivity of these two states with the European Union,” the Presidential Administration added.

The EU heads of state and government condemned Russia’s interference in Moldova’s democratic processes and welcomed the adoption of the third sanctions package against those responsible for actions aimed at undermining Moldova’s sovereignty and independence.

President Iohannis called for a strong message of support from the EU for Moldova’s European integration process, particularly in the context of the upcoming elections in Chișinău, while condemning Russia’s destabilization attempts.

European support for Moldova must be provided through all necessary means—economic, financial, and security. President Klaus Iohannis also praised the recent visit of the President of the European Commission to Chișinău and the launch of a Growth Plan for Moldova.
