Over the past seven years, the European Union has invested over €36.5 million in 18 localities in the Republic of Moldova, significantly impacting the quality of life for citizens.
Under the umbrella of the project “Construction of water supply and sewerage infrastructure, as well as energy efficiency in public buildings,” the EU has allocated substantial resources to ensure access to clean water, modern sewage services, and quality educational infrastructure.
Schools, being important community centers, have been a focal point, with eight institutions in Șoldănești, Bălți, Sângerei, Ungheni, Strășeni, Dubăsari, Leova, and Basarabeasca benefiting from renovations, thus improving conditions for over 5,000 students and staff. Approximately €15 million has been invested in these modernization works, including roof repairs, thermal insulation, window replacements, heating and ventilation systems upgrades, as well as toilet renovations. Additionally, alongside creating modern and comfortable spaces, the EU project has significantly reduced energy consumption (by 59%) and CO2 emissions (by 57%).
EU investments haven’t stopped there but have continued in the field of water supply and sewage in ten localities across the Republic of Moldova. This initiative has directly impacted the quality of life for over 100,000 people. The modernization of water and sewage networks amounted to €21 million, contributing to the renovation of 200 kilometers of water supply network and the construction of 30 kilometers of sewage network. Improvements also included the modernization of the water supply system, installation of water reservoirs, improvement of drinking water quality, and modernization of the sewage network.
These efforts were made possible through funding and project implementation by the European Union, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Moldova) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova. In total, the European Union allocated €36.5 million for this joint effort, of which €33 million went to construction works, and €3.5 million covered technical documentation development. The project was implemented between 2017 and 2024.
