US reaffirms support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

The United States reaffirmed its support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, after Tiraspol passed a resolution through congress of deputies at all levels in Tiraspol, seeking for help from Russia.

“Given Russia’s increasingly aggressive and destabilizing role in Europe, we are following Russia’s actions in Transdniestria and the broader situation there very closely,” Matthew Miller,  U.S. Department of State spokesman, told RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service.

Matthew Miller urged the Moldovan Government and the de facto authorities in Tiraspol to work together and find solutions to the pressing concerns of communities on both banks of the Nistru.

On February 28, a congress of so-called deputies of all levels was held in Tiraspol and this adopted a resolution invoking pressure, including economic and social one, exerted by the Moldovan authorities.

The Transnistrian administration has requested protection from the Russian Federation and plans to inform the UN Secretary-General, the European Parliament, and other international institutions.

Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Oleg Serebrian, and the Bureau for Reintegration Policies have dismissed the statements originating from Tiraspol as propaganda. Moldovan authorities emphasize that the Transnistrian region enjoys the benefits of peace, security, and economic integration policies with the European Union, which are advantageous for all citizens.
