Which are the most productive branches of Moldova’s industry?

Forumul Economic Regional Moldova 2024 – Vatra Dornei, 4–6 iulie

In the Republic of Moldova, the food industry represents the industrial sector with the highest production value, with a focus on the production of oils.

In 2022, the production of oils reached a volume of eight billion lei. In contrast, a decrease of 1.5% was observed in the textile industry during the same period. These findings stem from an analysis conducted by economic expert Veaceslav Ioniță.

According to the economic expert’s analysis, the top three industrial branches with the highest production volume are the production of oils (8.1 billion lei), meat processing (6.6 billion lei), and the production of rubber and plastics (3.5 billion lei).

The data provided by the economic expert indicates that over the past five years, the industries that have experienced the most significant growth are the production of oils, with a growth rate of 133%, followed by the machinery manufacturing industry with 107%, and milling products with a growth rate of 66.7%.

When someone tells us that agriculture doesn’t matter in Moldova, I’ll tell you a simple thing: 43% of the remaining industry in our country is occupied by processing agricultural products (34.6% in the food industry and 8% in wine production). Thanks to farmers, the highest value created per employee occurs in agricultural production branches, says Veaceslav Ioniță.

On the other hand, the industries with the smallest production volume, which does not exceed 3%, are construction and metal production, the chemical industry, and glass processing.

Veaceslav Ioniță also presented the annual earnings of an employee in the largest branches of the country’s industry. According to the data, workers in the non-metallic minerals industry are at the top, where annual earnings per employee reach 1.7 billion lei.

Following closely are employees in the chemical and food industries, with annual earnings of 1.5 and 1.4 billion lei, respectively, per person.

According to general data, industrial production in the Republic of Moldova has shown a downward trend in recent years. In 2020, it experienced a decrease of 5.5%, but was followed by a significant increase of 12.1% in the following year. However, the volume of production recorded a decline of 5.1% in 2022 and 3.6% in 2023.

However, the volume of industrial production per employee is on the rise. While in the year 2000 its value was 396 thousand lei, by 2023 it had reached 797 thousand lei.
