Coordinated Control at Leușeni–Albița to Be Expanded to Improve Traffic Efficiency and Support Cross-Border Trade

The Republic of Moldova and Romania intend to extend, in April 2026, the agreement regarding coordinated control at the Leușeni-Albița crossing point. The document is reviewed annually, based on the analysis of passenger and goods flows, as well as other relevant technical indicators.

Statements from the Customs Service Leadership

The Head of the Customs Service, Radu Vrabie, stated that this practice is already applied at the border with Romania in two points: Leușeni-Albița and Giurgiulești-Galați, on the outbound direction. Authorities aim to extend the mechanism to other posts, including Ungheni-Ungheni, as well as to implement bidirectional coordinated control on the territory of both states. According to the official, the system has brought visible improvements, although some technical aspects still need to be finalized.

Situation at the Border with Ukraine

Regarding the border with Ukraine, all crossing points are operating normally despite the regional context. There are seven customs posts where joint control is applied based on a bilateral agreement. Authorities are currently evaluating all 67 existing crossing points to decide which ones are truly necessary, aiming to optimize the network – fewer points, but more efficient and better equipped.

Priority: Traffic Flow and Trade Support

A major objective of the Customs Service is to reduce waiting times and facilitate movement at the border. The implemented measures are particularly aimed at supporting exporters so that they can reach external markets more quickly.

Traffic Evolution and Regional Cooperation

Following the outbreak of war in the region, commercial flows have predominantly shifted toward the border with Romania. Whereas significant queues were recorded in the past, traffic is now managed more efficiently. Good relations with neighboring states have enabled the strengthening of cooperation, including through trilateral meetings and discussions with Romanian customs authorities focused on combating fraud and streamlining controls.

Measures for the Easter Holiday Period

Customs authorities are also preparing a set of special actions for the Easter period, when traffic significantly increases due to the return of citizens from the diaspora and tourist travel. The goal is to avoid congestion and ensure as smooth a circulation as possible at the border.
