Delphi-2M: Artificial Intelligence Predicting Risks of Cancer, Heart Attack, and Over 1,000 Diseases

A new artificial intelligence tool promises to transform how health risks are managed, with significant implications for the medical sector and insurance market.

According to a study published in Nature, researchers have developed the Delphi-2M model, capable of estimating a patient’s risk of developing over 1,000 diseases in a single assessment.

How Delphi-2M Works

The tool analyzes medical history, lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, or alcohol consumption, as well as patients’ age and sex. The assessment covers a time horizon of up to ten years, providing a predictive view of future health.

The model provides accurate predictions for conditions with clear progression, such as certain types of cancer, heart attacks, or sepsis, but is less reliable for variable conditions, such as mental health disorders.

Economic and Medical Impact

Implementing Delphi-2M can optimize preventive, diagnostic, and treatment decisions, reducing costs associated with complex treatments and hospitalizations. It can also significantly impact the health insurance industry by identifying high-risk patients early.

Data and Testing

Delphi-2M was trained on anonymized data from 400,000 individuals from the UK Biobank and tested on 1.9 million patients from Denmark’s National Patient Registry, ensuring the relevance of predictions across diverse populations.

Outlook

Researchers hope the tool will be available to physicians within the next 5-10 years to support prevention, early diagnosis, and personalized treatments. This innovation could fundamentally transform health management, reduce pressure on healthcare systems, and create new economic opportunities in medical technology.
