“Energy Bridge: From Dependence to Energy Autonomy” | Strengthening Romania–Republic of Moldova Energy Cooperation in the Context of Transition towards Integration into the European Energy Market

Ambassador Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, Honorary President of the Association of Romanian Investors in the Republic of Moldova (AIR), together with the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Junghietu, opened on 27 May 2026 the conference “Energy Bridge: From Dependence to Energy Autonomy”, an event dedicated to energy security, the green transition, and strategic cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

The conference was organized by the Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Moldova, the Commercial and Economic Promotion Office, and the Association of Romanian Investors in the Republic of Moldova.

Energy as a Strategic Pillar of Romania–Moldova Cooperation

In his speech, Ambassador Cristian-Leon Țurcanu emphasized that the relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova has long surpassed symbolic historical and cultural proximity and has become a concrete partnership based on projects, investments, and strategic infrastructure developments.

He underlined that this relationship is defined by solidarity, resilience, and a shared vision of full integration into the European Union.

“Relations between the two banks of the Prut River are no longer only about common aspirations and historical fraternity. They are translated into concrete facts, into open construction sites, into megawatts and cubic meters of gas delivered on time,” the Ambassador stated.

Energy Interconnections as the Key to Regional Independence

A central point of the discussions was the acceleration of energy interconnection projects between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, considered essential for strengthening energy security and reducing vulnerabilities.

In this context, the accelerated development of the high-voltage power lines Vulcănești–Chișinău and Suceava–Bălți was highlighted. Each installed electricity pole represents a step closer to the European single energy market and a gradual departure from historical energy dependencies.

Transfer of Expertise and Access to European Funds

The intervention also emphasized Romania’s role in providing expertise in accessing European funds and in implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, from the thermal rehabilitation of public buildings to the modernization of centralized heating systems.

The transition to clean energy—wind and solar—was presented as a major opportunity for transforming the region into a competitive actor in the future energy market.

Message of Unity and European Perspective

In conclusion, the message conveyed was clear: beyond history, language, and culture, the two countries are united by a shared project for a free, prosperous, and secure future—built together.
