Energy Cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Sweden Strengthened through New Projects Discussed in Meeting between Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu and Swedish Ambassador Petra Lärke

The Republic of Moldova and Sweden are exploring the expansion of cooperation in the energy sector, focusing on projects related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. The topic was discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghietu, and the Swedish Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Petra Lärke.

The officials evaluated ongoing projects and opportunities for developing the bilateral partnership.

Pilot Renewable Energy Project in Cociulia

The village of Cociulia is becoming an example for the energy transition in the Republic of Moldova with the launch of the first pilot community renewable energy project supported by Sweden. The initiative involves installing a 49 kW photovoltaic power plant, which will help reduce the energy expenses of the residents participating in the project.

Waste-to-Energy Project and Swedfund Support

During the discussions, cooperation with Swedfund was also analyzed for the development of the Waste-to-Energy project. This entails conducting pre-feasibility studies on energy recovery from waste at CET‑Nord and Termoelectrica. The project benefits from a grant of approximately 9 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to over 80,000 euros.

Support for Energy Efficiency

Minister Dorin Junghietu appreciated Sweden’s contribution to the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership, a mechanism through which projects aimed at modernizing thermal energy systems and increasing energy efficiency in the Republic of Moldova are funded.

Plans for Future Collaborations

The officials also discussed long-term cooperation prospects, including the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Energy and the Stockholm Environment Institute. The document is expected to support the development of the Republic of Moldova’s energy modeling capacities and the assessment of policies included in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan through 2050.
