EU increases support for the Republic of Moldova and the Eastern Neighborhood by 25 million euros
Siegfried Mureșan emphasizes that independent non-governmental organizations play a crucial role in strengthening democracy, especially in EU candidate countries such as the Republic of Moldova.
These organizations face pressures and anti-democratic actions from the Russian Federation, and the withdrawal of U.S. support increases their vulnerabilities.
Therefore, the EU considers it imperative to support these organizations to enable them to continue their vital work.
Details on the EU budget for 2026
The amendment approved by the European Parliament’s Budget Committee will be submitted for approval to the EP plenary and will form part of the Parliament’s position in the final negotiations with the Council and the Commission regarding the EU Budget for 2026.
This year, the EU approved a financial package of 1.9 billion euros for the Republic of Moldova, aimed at supporting economic reforms and the country’s integration into the European Union. Of this amount, 385 million euros will be provided as non-reimbursable grants, and 1.5 billion euros as loans on favorable terms. Funds will be distributed in semi-annual installments starting in 2025, depending on progress in implementing the reforms outlined in Moldova’s Government Reform Agenda.
Economic and political implications
Increasing financial allocations for the Eastern Neighborhood reflects the EU’s commitment to regional stability and development. Support for civil society and democratic reforms contributes to strengthening the rule of law and democratic institutions, which are essential for EU integration. In the current geopolitical context, this measure underscores the EU’s solidarity with its Eastern partners and its commitment to fundamental democratic values.
