EU–Moldova Investment Conference 2026: Over One Billion Euros Mobilized for the Economic Transformation of the Republic of Moldova

The Republic of Moldova is seeking to strengthen its position on the investment map of Eastern Europe, and the EU–Moldova Investment Conference, held in Chișinău on June 4, represents one of the most important economic promotion exercises organized in recent years

The event brings together representatives of European institutions, national authorities, international financial institutions, investors, and the business community, at a time when the European integration process is accompanied by an extensive programme of reforms and investments.

The conference takes place one year after the launch of the European Union Growth Plan for the Republic of Moldova, an unprecedented financial mechanism providing the country with up to €1.9 billion for the period 2025–2027. Beyond its financial dimension, the plan aims to accelerate economic convergence with the European Union, develop infrastructure, and create a more competitive and predictable investment environment.

A strong signal for international investors

The main message from Chișinău is that the Republic of Moldova aims to transition from the status of an external assistance beneficiary to an attractive destination for private investment. The authorities presented progress achieved in economic reform and alignment with European standards, highlighting opportunities in sectors considered strategic for future development.

The interest shown by European and regional investors confirms this trend. Within the European Commission’s call for expressions of interest for investments in the Republic of Moldova, dozens of projects have been submitted, demonstrating that the business environment is increasingly viewing the Moldovan market as a development platform for operations oriented towards the European space.

Green energy, transport infrastructure, digitalization, the pharmaceutical industry, high value-added agriculture, and logistics have been identified as sectors with the highest growth potential. These areas benefit both from European Union financial support and from increasing demand generated by modernization and regional integration processes.

Private investments are gaining momentum

One of the most significant outcomes of the conference was the announcement of new private investments with a total value of approximately €364 million. The projects focus mainly on renewable energy production, the construction materials industry, industrial development, and other sectors with a direct impact on economic competitiveness.

These investments are particularly relevant as they indicate that major international companies are no longer assessing the Republic of Moldova solely through the lens of regional risks, but also in terms of opportunities generated by proximity to the European market and available funding programmes.

At the same time, partnerships signed between financial institutions, investors, and public authorities will facilitate access to capital for infrastructure projects, energy efficiency initiatives, digitalization, and private sector development. These mechanisms are essential in an economy where financing costs and limited access to investment have long represented significant barriers to growth.

European economic integration as the main growth engine

From an economic perspective, the value of the conference goes beyond individual investment announcements. The event reflects a paradigm shift in the relationship between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, where the focus is moving from assistance and budgetary support towards investment, competitiveness, and economic integration.

Gradual access to segments of the European Single Market offers Moldovan companies the opportunity to participate more actively in European value chains, attract new technologies, and increase higher value-added exports. At the same time, investors benefit from a favourable geographical position, competitive costs, and the prospect of European Union accession.

For the Moldovan economy, the main challenge remains transforming announced commitments and projects into effectively implemented investments. The experience of other candidate countries shows that success depends on the continuity of reforms, the strengthening of institutions, and the administrative capacity to efficiently manage funded projects.

Over one billion euros in focus for the Moldovan economy

The overall balance is significant: investment partnerships, financing instruments, and announced private projects exceed the threshold of one billion euros. For an economy of Moldova’s size, this represents a strong signal of confidence and an important opportunity to accelerate economic development.

The EU–Moldova Investment Conference has demonstrated that the European integration process is beginning to generate tangible economic effects as well. If the announced projects are implemented according to schedule, they can contribute to infrastructure modernization, job creation, productivity growth, and the strengthening of the Republic of Moldova’s economic resilience in a complex regional context.

More than just a discussion forum, the Chișinău event aims to send a clear message to the international business community: the Republic of Moldova is seeking to position itself as an emerging investment destination, supported by reforms, European Union backing, and an increasingly concrete European perspective.
