European integration remains the Republic of Moldova’s top priority, while unification with Romania is being discussed as a possible alternative

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola stated that the future of the Republic of Moldova must be decided exclusively by its citizens and authorities in Chișinău.

Asked about the possibility of unification with Romania as a “Plan B” to accelerate the country’s accession to the European Union, the European official emphasized that such a decision lies entirely with the Republic of Moldova.

European Union Support for Moldova’s European Path

Roberta Metsola recalled that she recently welcomed President Maia Sandu to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where the Moldovan leader was awarded the European Order of Merit. She highlighted that, despite repeated attempts at destabilization and ongoing disinformation campaigns, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova continue to demonstrate their commitment to a European future.

The President of the European Parliament also reaffirmed the European Union’s support, stressing that the EU stands firmly with the people of Moldova and backs their European aspirations.

Progress in the European Integration Process

Metsola noted that the Republic of Moldova has made significant progress in its rapprochement with the European Union. The country is already part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and benefits from the “Roam Like at Home” system, while its economic integration with the EU is expected to continue in the coming period.

She also pointed out that the official opening of negotiations on the first accession chapters marks another important milestone, with the ultimate objective of ensuring that the benefits of closer ties with the European Union are felt concretely by citizens in their daily lives.

Financial Support for Candidate Countries

The President of the European Parliament stated that the institution she leads is calling for the inclusion of the necessary funding in the European Union’s multiannual budget to support all candidate countries. According to Metsola, investments made today in the enlargement process will contribute to building a stronger European Union in the future.

Unification with Romania Viewed as a Possible Alternative

The authorities in Chișinău maintain that the Republic of Moldova’s primary objective remains accession to the European Union, which continues to be the foreign policy direction supported by the majority of its citizens. Nevertheless, in recent months, several officials have suggested that unification with Romania could serve as an alternative option should the EU accession process become blocked or face significant delays.

Statements to this effect have been made by both President Maia Sandu and Economy Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu, who described a potential unification between the two countries as a possible “Plan B.”
