European Parliament calls for accelerated EU accession negotiations and increased financial support for Moldova
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution of major importance for Moldova’s future, officially requesting the start of accession negotiations on chapters and increased financial and technical support for Chișinău. The resolution was approved by a large majority – 490 votes in favor, 65 against, and 86 abstentions – signaling strong support from the European legislature for Moldova’s European path.
The announcement was made by Siegfried Mureșan, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Moldova and co-initiator of the resolution.
Moldova’s progress on reforms
According to the European official, Moldova has shown it is ready to open accession negotiations, implementing structural reforms despite a tense geopolitical context. From strengthening democratic institutions and improving the legislative framework to managing the refugee crisis from Ukraine, the authorities in Chișinău have demonstrated their capacity to align with European standards.
“Moldova has shown a clear commitment to the European Union and has protected its borders against hybrid threats from the Russian Federation,” emphasized Mureșan.
Increasing financial and technical support
The second key element of the resolution focuses on strengthening European support for Moldova. The European Parliament calls for additional funding and technical assistance to help Chișinău face economic, political, and security pressures from the Russian Federation.
“The security of the European Union depends on the security of Moldova. Russia is attempting to slow down its European path, bring it back under its influence, and use it, as with Belarus, to destabilize Ukraine and the EU,” warned Mureșan.
Hybrid warfare and economic implications
According to presented data, Russia has allocated the equivalent of 1% of Moldova’s GDP for disinformation, electoral bribery, and illicit funding of pro-Russian parties, attempting to influence the parliamentary elections on September 28. These hybrid tactics, supported even by artificial intelligence, generate additional costs for the Moldovan state, which must invest in economic resilience and security.
From an economic perspective, European financial support becomes crucial for the country’s macroeconomic stability. Moldova, with an economy heavily affected by the consequences of the war in Ukraine and recent energy crises, requires additional funds for infrastructure modernization, energy system consolidation, and attracting foreign investments.
A strong signal for investors
The adoption of the resolution sends an important message to the international business community. Accelerating the EU accession process provides predictability and growth prospects, key factors for attracting foreign direct investment. At the same time, increased technical support can contribute to a more competitive and transparent business environment.
For investors, opening negotiations on chapters means closer alignment with European legislative and economic standards, reducing risks and ensuring a more stable and regulated framework. This makes Moldova increasingly attractive for strategic projects in renewable energy, transport infrastructure, digitalization, and modern agriculture.
Conclusion
The European Parliament’s resolution marks a crucial moment in Moldova-EU relations. By accelerating accession negotiations and increasing financial support, Chișinău receives not only a guarantee of political security but also a real chance for sustainable economic development.
“The people of Moldova are not alone in the face of this aggression. The European Union stands with them, and today’s resolution shows that we are ready to intensify our support,” concluded Siegfried Mureșan.
