Free International Port of Giurgiulești declared a strategic infrastructure objective for the logistics sector of the Republic of Moldova

The Government of the Republic of Moldova has approved amendments to the legislation regulating the activity of the Free International Port of Giurgiulești, a decision aimed at strengthening its role in regional trade and creating improved conditions for investments and the expansion of logistics capacities

Under the new provisions, the port will be officially designated as a strategic port infrastructure objective.

The legislative amendments introduce clearer rules for investors and companies operating within the port area. One of the key changes concerns the clear delineation of responsibilities between the main investor and resident companies, establishing a more transparent and efficient management framework for port operations.

Another important aspect of the reform is the alignment of customs and fiscal regulations with European Union standards. According to the authorities, this measure is expected to increase the attractiveness of the port for international investors and logistics operators. At the same time, the adopted amendments do not introduce additional taxes or obligations for companies already operating in the port.

The new provisions also ensure the continuation of port operations beyond 2030, the deadline set under the current regulatory framework. This guarantees operational stability and long-term predictability for investors and businesses active in the port area.

The Free International Port of Giurgiulești represents the main access point of the Republic of Moldova to international maritime and river transport. Together with the Giurgiulești Passenger and Cargo Port, it forms the Giurgiulești port complex, an essential logistics hub for the country’s foreign trade.

At the end of 2025, a total of 74 companies were registered as residents of the port, employing approximately 800 people.

On 31 December 2025, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed an agreement to sell Danube Logistics, the operator of the port, to National Company “Maritime Ports Administration” SA Constanța.

The new owner has committed to long-term investments aimed at developing the port infrastructure. Planned projects include the modernization of facilities, expansion of port capacities and improvement of services for operators. In addition, the port is expected to be more closely integrated into the commercial and logistics network of the Port of Constanța.

These developments are intended to transform the Giurgiulești port complex into a more competitive and resilient logistics platform, fully integrated into European transport corridors.
