Giuseppe Grimaldi appointed as the new EBRD Director in Moldova: regional experience to support reforms and economic development

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has appointed a new director for its Moldova office.

Giuseppe Grimaldi will take office starting October 1, succeeding Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, who will assume the role of EBRD head in Iraq, according to IPN.

With extensive experience in reforms and public policy across Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, Giuseppe Grimaldi currently serves as Head of the Department for Sectoral Reforms in Sustainable Infrastructure at EBRD headquarters in London. In this role, he contributed to the development of the institution’s first policy framework dedicated to state-owned enterprises and was involved in economic projects in Ukraine, focusing on the regional energy sector.

EBRD highlights that Grimaldi’s regional expertise will directly support Moldova’s reform efforts, aiming for closer alignment with European Union standards and regulations, in the context of the country’s European integration path. This translates into ongoing projects for infrastructure modernization, public sector reforms, and strategic investment support for sustainable economic development.

Since its operations in Moldova began in 1992, EBRD has invested in over 185 projects, with total investments exceeding €2.7 billion. The bank’s projects cover sectors such as infrastructure, energy, industry, and small and medium-sized enterprises, contributing to economic growth and job creation.

Grimaldi’s appointment comes at a time when Moldova continues to strengthen its economic and institutional ties with the European Union. With his experience, the new EBRD director will play a key role in facilitating structural reforms, attracting investments, and promoting a stable and predictable economic framework, essential for the country’s sustainable development.
