Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, on European Integration and Financial System Modernization
During her working visit to Brussels, the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), Anca Dragu, held important discussions with Romanian Members of the European Parliament, Eugen Tomac and Nicolae Ștefănuță, focusing on strengthening support for Moldova’s European integration and highlighting the direct impact of NBM reforms on macroeconomic stability and the modernization of the financial market.
European support and NBM’s role in the European path
The dialogue with Vice-President of the European Parliament, Nicolae Ștefănuță, focused on European backing for Moldova’s integration process and emphasized the active role of NBM. A significant achievement highlighted during the discussions was Moldova’s connection to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), enabling fast, secure, and cost-efficient transactions within a space of over 500 million consumers.
Governor Anca Dragu explained that innovative solutions such as the MIA instant payment system create tangible benefits for citizens and businesses. “At the National Bank of Moldova, every decision centers on people’s lives and the needs of the real economy. Through MIA, national currency transfers are fast and secure, and the operational integration into SEPA will ensure the same efficiency for euro payments. These achievements bring the European Union closer to every family and business in Moldova,” emphasized the Governor.
Structural reforms and financial market modernization
In discussions with MEP Eugen Tomac, emphasis was placed on the continuous support of the European Parliament for Moldova’s progress towards EU membership. NBM’s leadership in negotiations on three key chapters—free movement of capital, financial services, and economic and monetary policy—was also highlighted.
“The National Bank of Moldova actively participates in legislative, institutional, and functional transformations aimed at strengthening a predictable and competitive financial framework. We are committed to ensuring that all citizens have access to the same safe and accessible financial services as in European countries. Our actions concretely support Moldova’s European path, building a stable, resilient, and inclusive economy,” said Governor Dragu.
NBM reforms focus on modernizing the banking system, digitalizing financial services, and implementing the best European practices. These measures not only enhance transaction efficiency and security but also strengthen public trust in national financial institutions.
International cooperation as a key to economic success
The Brussels meeting also highlighted the importance of experience exchange and close cooperation with European institutions. This collaboration is crucial for adopting best practices, strengthening public confidence in the financial system, and creating a competitive economy that ensures better living standards for all Moldovan citizens.
Governor Anca Dragu underlined that European integration is not only a political goal but also a concrete economic process, in which NBM plays a central role. Through pragmatic actions and structural reforms, the central bank contributes to macroeconomic stability, financial system resilience, and aligning Moldova with European standards.
Direct impact on citizens and businesses
NBM reforms have tangible effects on citizens’ daily lives and the business environment. The MIA system and SEPA integration facilitate fast money transfers, reduce transaction costs, and provide access to high-quality financial services on par with European countries. Each decision of NBM translates into a concrete benefit for the economy and society, demonstrating that monetary policy can be a real instrument to improve quality of life.
Through these initiatives, NBM confirms that national institutions can become genuine engines of European integration, supporting Moldova on its path towards EU accession and building a stable, modern, and competitive economy.
