Indonesia has inaugurated the largest floating solar farm in Southeast Asia. A 100 million dollars investment

Indonesia has inaugurated the largest floating solar farm in Southeast Asia, with an investment of over 100 million dollars, as an effort to develop renewable energy production in the archipelago, still in its early stages

The Cirata floating solar park, with a capacity of 192 megawatts, is set up on an artificial lake of 200 hectares, located in the western part of Java island, about 130 kilometers away from Jakarta, the country’s capital.

“Today is a historic day as our great dream of building a large-scale renewable energy plant has finally become a reality”, said Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the inauguration.

“We have succeeded in building the largest floating solar plant in Southeast Asia and the third-largest in the world“, continued the president.

The project, a collaboration between the National Electricity Corporation of Indonesia (PLN) and the renewable energy company Masdar, based in Abu Dhabi, involved three years of work and an investment of 108,7 million dollars (100 million euros).

Funded by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Société Générale, and Standard Chartered, the solar park consists of 340,000 solar panels and aims to provide electricity for 50,000 homes, according to PLN.

While the Indonesian government aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, solar and wind energy sources currently each represent less than 1% of the country’s energy mix.

The largest economy in Southeast Asia still heavily relies on fossil fuels, especially coal, for electricity generation. Faced with air pollution issues, Indonesia pledged not to build new coal-fired power plants starting in 2023. However, despite environmental activists’ protests, the country continues to develop already planned coal plants.

Moreover, Indonesia aims to become a key player in the electric vehicle market, being the world’s largest producer of nickel, a crucial metal for battery manufacturing. Nevertheless, some industrial parks hosting nickel smelters with high energy consumption are powered by coal.
