Institutional Dialogue between the National Bank of Moldova and the National Bank of Romania: Cooperation in Monetary Matters and Promotion of Cultural Heritage

Central banks play a role that goes beyond ensuring financial stability and monetary policy; they also carry a cultural and identity dimension, where currency becomes a symbol of national traditions and values.

This aspect was highlighted during the meeting between the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), Anca Dragu, and NBM Vice-Governor, Constantin Șchendra, with representatives of the National Bank of Romania (NBR) – Cristian Popa, Member of the Board of Administration, and Ionel Nițu, Director of the Directorate for Issue, Treasury, and Cashier.

According to the NBM, the meeting marked a new stage in strengthening the institutional dialogue between the two central banks, with the main objective being the exchange of best practices and cooperation in currency issuance, with a focus on aligning the Republic of Moldova with European standards and trends.

Cultural Dimension of the NBM–NBR Partnership

During the discussions, NBM Governor Anca Dragu emphasized that the relationship between the two institutions goes beyond technical aspects and extends to objectives with educational and cultural impact:
“The durable partnership we have with NBR in the monetary and numismatic field goes beyond the technical framework and is aligned with the promotion of educational, cultural, and symbolic objectives. Through the constant exchange of best practices and the development of joint projects, we enhance the numismatic heritage, increase its visibility, and connect it to European trends and standards,” she said.

The issuance of commemorative and jubilee coins was presented not just as a technical process, but as a way to highlight key elements of historical and cultural heritage. Coins thus become genuine educational tools, bringing the public closer to history and the symbols of national and European identity.

Joint Projects and Exchange of Expertise

The meeting agenda included identifying concrete areas of cooperation between NBM and NBR, such as:

  • joint or coordinated issuance of commemorative and jubilee coins;

  • organizing thematic exhibitions and educational programs on monetary history;

  • cultural initiatives to showcase the role of currency in strengthening identity and social cohesion.

These initiatives complement financial and cultural education efforts, helping the public understand the role of money in society.

Promotion of Numismatic Heritage

The NBR delegation’s visit concluded with a tour of the National Bank of Moldova museum, where collections of commemorative and jubilee coins are displayed. These reflect not only the evolution of Moldova’s monetary circulation but also prominent personalities, traditions, and cultural symbols.

Through such initiatives, NBM and NBR contribute to the consolidation of a shared numismatic heritage, where currency serves as a witness to history and a tool for transmitting values.

Conclusion

The meeting between NBM and NBR representatives highlights the importance of cross-border cooperation in monetary and numismatic matters. Beyond technical and institutional aspects, joint projects aim to promote cultural and educational identity in line with European trends. Central banks are increasingly recognized as multidimensional institutions – financial, educational, and cultural – strengthening the connection between institutions and society.
