Diplomat George D. Gallin’s Grave Restored with Romania’s Support

The grave of George D. Gallin, former Consul of the Kingdom of Romania in Chernivtsi, located in the city’s historic cemetery, has been restored with financial support from the Government of Romania, through a project implemented by the Department for Romanians Abroad.

The Romanian diplomat’s crypt had been vandalized during the Soviet period and had deteriorated significantly, with a risk of collapse. The funerary monument was restored after 86 years without maintenance work.

Monument Restoration Carried Out by the Heritage Protection Association

The restoration works were carried out by Laurențiu Dragomir, President of the Heritage Protection Association.

On August 29, flowers were laid at George D. Gallin’s grave by Romania’s Ambassador to Kyiv, Victor Micula, the Consul General of Romania in Chernivtsi, Irina Loredana Stănculescu, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture, Diana Băciuna, as well as representatives of the Romanian community in Chernivtsi.

The commemorative ceremony took place in the year marking 105 years since the death of the Romanian diplomat.

Chernivtsi’s Historic Cemetery, a Valuable Part of Romanian Heritage

The restoration of the grave has once again highlighted the need to preserve Chernivtsi’s historic cemetery, one of the important sites of remembrance for the Romanian community in Bukovina.

The Consul General of Romania in Chernivtsi, Irina Loredana Stănculescu, emphasized that the cemetery can be regarded as a true “Pantheon of Romanian Personalities” and stressed the need for more extensive restoration works.

The Romanian diplomat also advocated for identifying a cross-border project aimed at preserving this heritage and maintaining the memory of the personalities who contributed to the history and culture of the region.

Approximately 600 Graves of Romanian Historical and Cultural Figures

According to restorer Laurențiu Dragomir, Chernivtsi’s historic cemetery contains approximately 600 graves of personalities who played an important role in Romanian history and culture.

Among them is the grave of Aron Pumnul, a scholar, revolutionary of the 1848 generation and teacher of Mihai Eminescu during the poet’s studies in Chernivtsi.

An Important Site of Remembrance for Bukovina

The historic cemetery preserves funerary monuments dedicated to teachers, priests, writers, politicians and representatives of the Romanian Bukovinian elite.

However, its historical and cultural value is increasingly affected by the passage of time, the lack of maintenance works and, in some cases, the destruction caused during the Soviet period.

Restoration, a Step Toward Heritage Preservation

The restoration of George D. Gallin’s grave represents an important step in preserving Romanian historical heritage in Chernivtsi and once again highlights the need for investments and projects aimed at protecting the entire cemetery.
