Italy Continues to Support Moldova’s Economic and Social Development: Investments and Bilateral Agreements

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Recean, met with the Italian Ambassador, Giuseppe Maria Perricone, in discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and Italy’s ongoing support for Moldova’s European Union accession process.
According to a government statement, the two officials emphasized the importance of cooperation in strategic areas such as energy security and social protection, considered fundamental for the stability and economic development of Moldova.
In recent years, Italy has provided significant financial support, amounting to approximately 90 million euros, invested in key projects aimed at reducing energy vulnerability, installing tens of thousands of smart meters, and supporting low-income households. Italian funds have also contributed to the digitalization of public services, the development of the healthcare system, and support for the agricultural sector, thereby strengthening the country’s infrastructure and administrative capacity.
Moreover, since September 1, 2025, the bilateral Social Protection Agreement has entered into force, guaranteeing Moldovan citizens living in Italy the right to a pension for their years of work, regardless of whether they choose to remain in Italy or return to Moldova. This agreement creates a stable framework for workforce mobility and helps reduce social risks for the diaspora.
Another important step will take place on November 8, 2025, when the Agreement on the Conversion of Driver’s Licenses will come into force. This will allow the recognition and exchange of all Moldovan driving licenses, eliminating logistical and bureaucratic difficulties faced by Moldovan citizens in Italy.
Currently, approximately 300,000 Moldovan citizens live in Italy, a community that plays an important role both economically, through remittances and knowledge transfer, and in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
This cooperation exemplifies Italy’s commitment to supporting Moldova’s economic and social development, while consolidating the country’s European trajectory and providing its citizens with concrete opportunities for integration and social protection.
