Japan Invests in the Modernization of Healthcare Services in the Republic of Moldova. Ungheni District Hospital to Receive Modern Ophthalmic Surgical Microscope

Ungheni District Hospital will receive modern medical equipment thanks to a grant provided by the Government of Japan through the Kusanone Grant Assistance for Human Security Program

The investment, worth more than $65,000, will enable the institution to strengthen its capacity to provide specialized ophthalmological services and high-precision surgical interventions.

The grant agreement was signed by Takeuchi Kazuyuki, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova, and Elvira Stati, Director of Ungheni District Hospital. The project provides for the procurement of a modern ophthalmic surgical microscope for the hospital’s ophthalmology department.

Modern Technology for Ophthalmic Surgery

The new equipment will directly contribute to strengthening the medical capacity of Ungheni District Hospital, providing doctors with the possibility to perform surgical interventions with a higher degree of precision.

According to the Embassy of Japan in Chișinău, the equipment will allow ophthalmic procedures to be carried out in safer conditions and in line with modern medical standards.

The impact of the project, however, extends beyond the technical modernization of a single medical institution. Ungheni District Hospital serves the population of the municipality and surrounding localities, while access to advanced equipment can reduce the need for patients to travel to more distant medical centers for certain specialized services.

Therefore, the Japanese investment also has an important component focused on increasing access to healthcare services, particularly for the population of the Ungheni region.

Bilateral Cooperation in Healthcare

During the signing ceremony, Ambassador Takeuchi Kazuyuki praised the initiative of Ungheni District Hospital and the work of its medical staff, who continue to provide surgical services to the local population despite limited resources.

The Japanese diplomat reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the development of the healthcare sector in the Republic of Moldova and emphasized the long-term nature of cooperation between the two countries.

The Japan–Moldova partnership in healthcare is part of a broader effort to support medical institutions in the Republic of Moldova through investments in infrastructure and equipment capable of having a direct impact on the quality of services provided to the population.

Kusanone – Investments in Essential Infrastructure and Public Services

The Ungheni project is financed through the Kusanone Grant Assistance for Human Security Program, which has been implemented in the Republic of Moldova since 2008.

During this period, the Government of Japan has provided grants totaling approximately $8 million for 97 projects in areas including healthcare, education and public utilities.

The funding mechanism is designed to support projects with a direct impact on local communities and to improve access to essential services.

Ungheni, Part of the Modernization of Healthcare Services

Equipping Ungheni District Hospital with an ophthalmic surgical microscope represents a targeted investment, but one with broader relevance for the development of regional healthcare services.

For district-level medical institutions, access to modern technologies is essential for maintaining and expanding specialized services outside major urban centers.
