Knife attack at a rally in Germany. The attacker was shot!

A man armed with a knife attacked several people who were about to participate in a far-right rally in Germany.

Several individuals, including a police officer, were injured. Sources cited by the British press say the injured officer is in serious condition.

The incident took place on Friday in the German city of Mannheim, in the central square. Several people tried to immobilize him, but he managed to escape and stabbed with the knife.

Later, he was shot by the police, Reuters reports.

Authorities have not disclosed the severity of the injuries to those involved in the incident, including those of the shot assailant.

A live broadcast made by anti-Islam activist Michael Stuerzenberger shows him preparing to address a small crowd.

Images circulating on social media show a bearded man attacking people in the square with a knife, one of whom suffered a deep cut to the leg. People try to immobilize him, and at one point, a police officer is seen in the footage shooting the attacker after he had stabbed another officer in the throat while the latter was leaning over another man lying on the ground.

The assailant is a young man with glasses and a thick beard. He attacked Michael Stuerzenberger.

Stuerzenberger, 59, describes himself as a journalist critical of Islam and has been a member of several far-right anti-Islam organizations, including the PEGIDA movement, which regularly organizes marches in cities, especially in eastern Germany.”
