Lithuania provides the Republic of Moldova with military assistance of 6 million euros and supports the acceleration of its integration into the European Union

Lithuania will provide the Republic of Moldova with military assistance worth 6 million euros over the period 2026–2028. The announcement was made by the Lithuanian president, Gitanas Nausėda, during a press conference held together with the Moldovan president, Maia Sandu.

The support is part of bilateral cooperation in the field of security and aims to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova in a tense regional context.

Cooperation in Security and Border Protection

The Lithuanian president emphasized that his country is ready to provide support in other important areas as well, including border protection and the exchange of expertise in the field of security.

According to Nausėda, the authorities in Vilnius are willing to share the expertise accumulated by Lithuania to help the Republic of Moldova strengthen its institutions and defense mechanisms against modern threats.

Hybrid Threats from Russia

The leader in Vilnius stated that both Lithuania and the Republic of Moldova are targeted by hybrid aggressions from Russia.

In this context, he reaffirmed Lithuania’s commitment to support Chișinău in countering hybrid attacks and attempts at destabilization, noting that the experience of the Baltic states can be valuable for Moldovan authorities.

European Integration of the Republic of Moldova

At the same time, Nausėda reiterated Lithuania’s firm support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and encouraged the authorities in Chișinău to accelerate the necessary reforms.

According to the Lithuanian president, the accession of both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union by 2030 represents a strategic objective for the region.
