Maia Sandu: Partnership with Romania and the European Path, a Driver of Security and Economic Development of the Republic of Moldova

In a global climate marked by instability and the attempts of major powers to expand their spheres of influence, the Republic of Moldova bases its security and development on strong foreign relations. President Maia Sandu emphasized that Russia continues to be a major destabilizing factor, and for small states the risks are increasing.
European Integration – A Fundamental Strategic Direction
According to Maia Sandu, accession to the European Union represents the most realistic option for ensuring the survival, freedom, and development of the Republic of Moldova as part of the free world. Foreign policy will focus on strengthening pragmatic partnerships capable of providing real support in times of crisis.
Strategic Relationship with Romania
The partnership with Romania is considered an essential pillar of the Republic of Moldova’s security, stability, and development, while also playing a key role in the country’s European trajectory. This strategic relationship provides political, economic, and security support in a challenging regional context.
Threats of Authoritarianism and the Importance of Freedom
Maia Sandu highlighted that peace is not enough without freedom, emphasizing that authoritarian regimes disregard human life and fundamental rights. Recalling the suffering endured under totalitarian regimes, the president reaffirmed the desire for Moldovans not to experience such hardships again.
International Partnerships and Cooperation with NATO
In the face of security risks, the Republic of Moldova will continue to strengthen bilateral relations with friendly states and deepen cooperation with international alliances, including NATO. Additionally, firm support for Ukraine remains crucial, as Moldova’s security is closely linked to the developments of the war in the neighboring state.
Strengthening Defense Capabilities
Although the Republic of Moldova’s defense budget is modest compared to other European countries, the authorities aim to increase it to 1% of GDP. External support plays a decisive role, through non-reimbursable financial assistance provided by the EU, NATO, and partners such as Germany, the USA, Romania, and Poland.
Military Modernization and Priorities for 2026
Following the approval of the National Defense Strategy and the acquisition of anti-aircraft and anti-drone systems, the Republic of Moldova will continue the military modernization process. In 2026, priorities will focus on developing military infrastructure and full alignment with Western standards, including the reception of a new radar provided with support from the European Union.
