Maia Sandu Warns Moldova Risks External Threats if EU Accession Is Delayed

Brussels, November 5, 2025 – Moldovan President Maia Sandu issued a stark warning on the critical importance of accelerating European Union accession, stressing that any delay could leave the country vulnerable to external threats.

Speaking at the Euronews Summit on EU Enlargement in Brussels, Sandu noted that Moldova has been ready since February to begin negotiations on the EU accession chapters, yet it awaits “determined action and solutions” from the Union.

“Accession to the European Union is the only guarantee for democracy, stability, and security. Our country has faced hybrid warfare, disinformation, and economic pressure from Russia, yet we continue state modernization and reforms,” Sandu said, according to Radio Chișinău.

Accelerated Reforms and a Unique Political Opportunity

The President emphasized that Moldova currently enjoys a favorable political environment, with all state institutions committed to implementing reforms necessary for European integration.

“We have a very good political opportunity, significant popular support, and the engagement of all state institutions in reform implementation. It would be a pity to waste this opportunity. Winning the recent elections does not mean Russia will leave Moldova alone,” Sandu stated.

Moldova is prepared to open the first negotiation clusters with the EU this month, with the strategic goal of completing accession negotiations by 2028.

Tense Geopolitical Context

During the conference, Sandu highlighted regional dynamics, expressing gratitude to Ukraine and its supporting states, while stressing the need for European unity in the face of external threats.

“We are very grateful to the Ukrainian people and states supporting Ukraine. EU and democratic countries’ continued support is essential; otherwise, the war will remain a threat not only to Ukraine but also to Moldova,” the President emphasized.

Addressing Hungary’s veto on Ukraine’s accession negotiations, Sandu noted that both Moldova and Ukraine have fulfilled their obligations and are awaiting a clear response from the EU.

“Both countries have done their homework. We are ready to move to the next stage. The stakes are not only Moldova’s and Ukraine’s future but the security of the entire European region,” Sandu added.

Moldova’s European Perspective

Sandu’s statements come at a crucial moment for EU enlargement policy, marked by internal tensions among member states and complex regional geopolitics.
Moldova received EU candidate status in June 2022 and completed the Commission’s nine reform recommendations in 2023, focusing on justice reform, anti-corruption measures, and democratic institution building.

The Moldovan government aims to become a full EU member by 2028, a goal Sandu describes as “a national project and a security guarantee for future generations.”
