Memorandum Between the Ministry of Energy and UNDP to Accelerate the Energy Transition in the Republic of Moldova

The Ministry of Energy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two institutions to modernize the energy system of the Republic of Moldova.

Partnership Objectives

The agreement provides for the implementation of initiatives focused on improving energy efficiency, digitalizing energy infrastructure, expanding the use of renewable energy sources, and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

UNDP’s Contribution to the Development of the Energy Sector

According to the Ministry of Energy, the support provided by UNDP and its development partners has played a significant role in drafting key strategic documents, including the National Energy and Climate Plan and the Building Renovation Strategy for the 2025–2050 period. At the same time, pilot projects such as “Green House” and “EcoVoucher” have been expanded nationwide.

Minister Dorin Junghietu emphasized that UNDP supports the implementation of the reforms required for a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy transition. In his view, geopolitical challenges and the volatility of energy markets make it essential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by promoting electrification, digitalization, and the integration of renewable energy sources.

Completed Projects and Future Investments

The authorities state that the partnership between UNDP and the Ministry of Energy, financially supported by the European Union and countries such as Italy, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, has enabled the installation of photovoltaic systems in nine district hospitals, the completion of energy audits, and the development of renewable energy communities. In addition, with Italy’s support through UNDP, 100,000 smart meters are set to be installed, a measure intended to optimize and improve energy consumption efficiency.
