MEP Siegfried Mureșan: “The Republic of Moldova could benefit from billions of euros from European pre-accession funds in the 2028–2034 period”
The Republic of Moldova could benefit, starting with the next multiannual budget of the European Union for the period 2028–2034, from European pre-accession funds similar to those granted to all candidate countries for accession.
According to Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan, there is already a European fund of over 40 billion euros dedicated to enlargement, from which each candidate country will receive a share.
The European Parliament’s request to increase the fund
The European Parliament proposes increasing this fund by 10%, considering that the current resources are not sufficient to support all candidate countries. At the same time, MEPs are calling for each country to be allocated a clear amount in advance, so that the Republic of Moldova knows exactly what financial resources it can access, depending on the progress of negotiations and the implementation of necessary reforms.
The objective: several billion euros for Chișinău
As the chief negotiator of the European Parliament, Siegfried Mureșan states that he aims to ensure that the Republic of Moldova is guaranteed several billion euros from the future European enlargement fund. This support would represent an important step in the process of rapprochement with the European Union.
Financial support already provided
The Republic of Moldova is already benefiting from the European Economic Growth Plan, worth 1.9 billion euros. Of this amount, nearly 500 million euros have already been transferred to Chișinău in the form of pre-financing and initial support installments.
Advancement of accession negotiations
The MEP stated that all negotiation clusters for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union could be opened by the end of 2026. The first group of chapters is expected to be opened by the end of June, while the remaining stages should be accelerated based on already achieved technical progress.
Support from European institutions
European Commissioner Marta Kos also recently announced that, within the next two months, the European Union could open political negotiations for all accession chapters with both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. According to the European Commission, both states are technically prepared, and political changes in Budapest could help unblock the process.
Position of the European Parliament
The European Parliament has officially called on the Council of the EU to begin negotiations for all accession clusters, starting with the chapter on Fundamental Values during the Cypriot presidency. The remaining five clusters are expected to be opened by the end of 2026, which would significantly accelerate the European path of the Republic of Moldova.
