Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chișinău, Mihai Popșoi, meets Moldovan diaspora in China: dialogue on consular services and promoting the image of the Republic of Moldova

Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, held a series of meetings with members of the Moldovan community in Beijing and Shanghai during his official visit to China

 The discussions focused on strengthening ties between the state and the diaspora, improving consular services, and enhancing the international visibility of the Republic of Moldova.

Moldovan diaspora in China: maintaining identity and connection with the homeland

During the meetings, Minister Popșoi emphasized that Moldovan citizens living in China remain strongly connected to their country of origin and actively contribute to promoting Moldova’s culture, traditions, and national image abroad.

“During my meetings in Beijing and Shanghai, I met students, entrepreneurs, and a vibrant community of people who remain connected to the Republic of Moldova and promote our country far from home,” said Mihai Popșoi.

Dialogue on consular services and citizens’ needs

The discussions also addressed the main challenges faced by Moldovan citizens abroad, including access to consular services and the need for more efficient institutional support.

The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, through the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in China, to continue strengthening consular services and direct engagement with Moldovan communities in major Chinese cities.

“The Embassy Comes Closer to Citizens” program extended in 2026

Participants were informed about the “The Embassy Comes Closer to Citizens” program, which provides for two consular outreach missions in 2026 in Shanghai and Xi’an.

The initiative aims to facilitate easier access to consular services for Moldovan citizens living far from diplomatic missions.

Cultural diplomacy and economic contribution of the diaspora

Community members also highlighted cultural projects organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Moldova in Beijing, including initiatives developed together with the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Romania in China, promoting cultural heritage and the Romanian language.

Minister Popșoi also emphasized the contribution of Moldovan entrepreneurs in China to promoting national products and supporting economic opportunities for the Republic of Moldova on the Chinese market.
