Modernization of the “Porubne–Siret” Border Crossing Point Advances: Expanded Infrastructure and Modern Equipment to Increase Transit Capacity

Modernization of the “Porubne – Siret” Border Crossing Point Enters a New Stage

The second stage of the modernization project for the “Porubne – Siret” border crossing point, one of the main road connections between Ukraine and Romania, has begun. The project focuses on developing the freight terminal infrastructure and introducing modern equipment for customs and border control procedures.

Contract Signed for Technical Documentation

As part of this stage, the procurement procedure has been completed and a contract has been signed with the contractor responsible for preparing the design and cost-estimate documentation.

Once the design process is completed, the authorities will launch a new procurement procedure to select the company that will supply, install and commission the technological equipment intended for the freight terminal.

Core Infrastructure Already Completed

A significant part of the infrastructure works has already been completed. These include the cement-concrete pavement, wastewater collection and treatment system, border guard service pavilion, and the metal structure above the four-lane section.

The project has also included the installation of a stationary radiation monitoring system, an automated vehicle barrier and blocker, and metal protective barriers for control equipment, as well as perimeter fencing and an external lighting system.

These works provide the infrastructure required for the safe operation of the modernized facility.

Four Additional Lanes for Freight Traffic

The terminal modernization project provides for the expansion of access infrastructure into Ukraine through the construction of four additional entry lanes.

The project also includes the development of an organized waiting area for freight carriers, as well as the implementation of modern technological solutions for customs and border control procedures.

Increased Capacity and Reduced Processing Times

According to the authorities responsible for the project, the completion of all stages is expected to significantly increase the transit capacity of the “Porubne – Siret” border crossing point.

The modernization is intended to reduce the time required for the processing and customs clearance of goods, improve the efficiency of logistics routes, and enhance trade flows between Ukraine and the European Union.

Project Funded by the European Union and Ukraine

The investment is being implemented through a 50/50 co-financing mechanism, combining European Union grant funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) with financing from Ukraine’s state budget.

The project is being coordinated by the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine and the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, with the support of the European Commission and CINEA.

A Strategic Corridor for Ukraine–EU Trade

By expanding infrastructure and digitalizing control procedures, the modernization of the “Porubne – Siret” border crossing point aims to strengthen a strategic logistics corridor between Ukraine and Romania, with a direct impact on freight transport and the integration of Ukraine’s infrastructure into the European transport network.
