Moldova Accelerates Road Infrastructure: A7 Reaches Pașcani, While A8 Takes Its First Step Toward the Republic of Moldova in 2026
The Moldova region is approaching an important stage in the development of its road infrastructure. According to State Secretary Ionel Scrioșteanu, 2026 could become a record year for Romania, with more than 250 kilometers of motorways and express roads opened to traffic.
At the center of attention is the Moldova region and the city of Iași, where work on major infrastructure projects is advancing at an accelerated pace.
The Moldova Motorway Advances Toward Pașcani
One of the major projects is the A7 Motorway, which will extend to Pașcani. Construction is being carried out on several sections, and the final segment – which includes a turbine-type interchange – is expected to open to traffic toward the end of the year. On some sections, such as the one between Adjud and Bacău, works are already advanced, with approximately 70% of the final asphalt layer already laid. Although winter conditions temporarily slowed down activity, authorities say the pace can be recovered in order to meet the established schedule.
New Road Connections with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine
At the same time, Romania is preparing the first sections of the A8 Motorway that will enter the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The first approximately 5.5 kilometers will be built across the Prut River, and the project will create a direct connection to Ungheni.
At the same time, in the northern direction, the Suceava–Siret Express Road will be built, a route of approximately 14 kilometers that will facilitate a fast connection with Chernivtsi. In addition to its civilian role, this road will also have strategic importance, including for military mobility. The tenders for the three sections of the project are expected to be finalized by the end of March, and contracts could be signed in May so that construction works can begin immediately.
The Ungheni Bridge – A Strategic Project Over the Prut
Another important project is the Ungheni Bridge, currently completed at more than 30%. Construction is expected to be finalized by mid-2026, together with a modernized border checkpoint. The control system will be a unified one, bringing together Romanian and Moldovan authorities in order to reduce waiting times and streamline traffic between the two countries.
A8 – Projects Still in Administrative Stages
However, on certain sections of the A8 Motorway in Iași County, actual construction work will not begin in 2026. For these segments, tender procedures, appeals, and design stages are still underway, which delays the entry of construction equipment onto the sites.
A Better Connected Region
Overall, 2026 is shaping up to be a decisive moment for the modernization of infrastructure in the Moldova region. The new motorways and express roads will facilitate mobility, reduce travel times, and open new economic opportunities for the region. Thus, Iași could become one of the main gateways to a better connected and more competitive Moldova at the regional level.
