Moldova’s Sunflower Seed Exports Reach Historic Levels in October
In October 2025, sunflower seed exports from the Republic of Moldova exceeded 120,000 tons, four times higher than in September and double the volume recorded in the same period of 2024, according to expert Iurie Rija.
This surge has left the domestic market with limited stocks for oil processing, while maintaining high revenues for exporters.
The average export price for sunflower seeds in October 2025 was 10.90 MDL/kg, up by 0.91 MDL compared to October 2024 and 45.9% higher than in October 2023. These figures position October 2025 as a historic peak for the Moldovan sunflower seed market.
In the first three months of the current agricultural season (August–October), 154,000 tons were exported, generating revenues of 1.69 billion MDL, significantly surpassing the records of the past five years.
The main export markets remain Romania and Turkey, with approximately 56,000 and 69,700 tons shipped respectively, followed by Bulgaria and other European countries. Export prices for certain markets reached up to 24.1 MDL/kg, particularly for deliveries to Ukraine.
A notable change in market leadership has occurred: Orom-Imexpo SRL from Orhei became the top exporter with 35,192 tons (23% of total exports between August and October), surpassing Rusagro-Prim SRL with 24,100 tons (16%). Other significant players include Vadalex Grains SRL (12,555 tons – 8%) and Agro-Nova Prim SRL (6,250 tons – 4%).
Early estimates for the 2025–2026 season suggest a potential total harvest exceeding 800,000 tons, which could satisfy strong export demand while partially replenishing domestic processing stocks. Analysts note that as new volumes enter the market, some downward pressure on prices is expected, a normal trend following post-harvest peaks.
In conclusion, 2025 marks a landmark season for Moldovan sunflower seed exports, combining record volumes with competitive prices and strengthening the country’s position in the international vegetable oil market.
