Deputy Nicu Popescu Appointed Special Envoy for European Affairs and Strategic Partnerships of the Republic of Moldova

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has signed a decree appointing Mr. Nicu Popescu as Special Envoy for European Affairs and Strategic Partnerships, a position aimed at strengthening the country’s international commitments and accelerating Moldova’s European integration process.

The mandate of the Special Envoy will include consolidating support for the country’s accession to the European Union, advancing the political dimension of the European integration process, and developing relations with Moldova’s strategic partners to strengthen regional peace and security. In carrying out his duties, Nicu Popescu will work closely with the Presidency, the Government, and the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

Nicu Popescu brings extensive diplomatic and political experience to this role. Previously, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, leading efforts to open Moldova’s EU accession negotiations and promoting strategic relations with EU member states, the United States, and other international partners. He currently serves as Co-Director of the European Security Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Paris, giving him a broad perspective on regional dynamics and European security policies.

The role of Special Envoy reflects the Presidency’s strategy to strengthen its institutional capacity by involving specialists with advanced expertise in areas of strategic importance to the Republic of Moldova. This initiative aims to effectively implement national priorities, enhance coherence in foreign policy, and strengthen the country’s ability to engage with international partners on issues critical to national development and security.

Through this appointment, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its firm commitment to the European path and to deepening relations with strategic partners, in the context of regional challenges and the goal of sustainable European integration.
