Rector of the State University of Moldova (USM), Igor Șarov, awarded the Negruzzi National Prize and the title of “Honorary Citizen” of Iași

The Rector of the State University of Moldova (USM), Igor Șarov, is among the laureates of the 10th edition of the Negruzzi National Prizes, an award recognizing outstanding contributions in the cultural, scientific, and educational fields.

The distinction was granted in appreciation of Igor Șarov’s lifetime work in promoting history, culture, and the development of the academic environment in the Republic of Moldova, as well as for his active role in fostering cultural and educational dialogue within the Romanian and European space.

The award ceremony took place on Monday, December 1, in the Main Hall of the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library in Iași. The prizes were presented by Mihai Chirica, Mayor of Iași, during an event attended by prominent figures from the academic and cultural communities.

The Negruzzi National Prizes celebrate excellence in artistic, humanistic, and scientific domains, commemorating 200 years of continuous cultural, civic, and European tradition. Since their inception in 2016, the prizes have been awarded annually on December 1 to highlight exceptional achievements of individuals contributing to the promotion of cultural values.

In the same period, the Iași City Council, through its decision of November 26, 2025, awarded Igor Șarov the title of “Honorary Citizen of Iași”, further acknowledging his impact on the academic and cultural community.

These distinctions consolidate Igor Șarov’s international recognition, emphasizing the important role of universities and educational leaders in promoting cultural, scientific, and European values.
