Republic of Moldova: A European Model of Energy Resilience and Strategic Progress
The Republic of Moldova is being recognized as a model of resilience and progress in the energy sector in a comprehensive article recently published by the prestigious European outlet POLITICO.
Under the title “Energy as a sovereignty project: Moldova’s road from crisis to Europe”, the piece highlights how the country transformed a major crisis into a strategic opportunity for independence and European integration.
Energy Crisis – Turning Point
The article notes that the critical moment was the 2021–2022 period, marked by the halt of Russian gas supplies and the risk of a blackout. In this context, Moldova had to completely rethink its energy model. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, cited by POLITICO, emphasized: “Moldova no longer wants to pay a political price for energy resources, as it has happened in the past 30 years. The new strategy is based on diversification, transparency, and competition.”
With the support of the European Union and through firm governance measures, Moldova diversified its supply sources, adopted legislative reforms, and initiated full integration into the European energy network.
Key Projects and Achievements
Among the most notable accomplishments highlighted are:
Synchronization of the electricity grid with ENTSO-E, enabling direct imports from Romania;
Vulcănești–Chișinău line, in its final implementation stage;
Bălți–Suceava interconnection, currently in preparation;
Joining the Vertical Gas Corridor, ensuring access to additional supply sources;
Upgrading internal networks and installing smart meters for increased efficiency;
Creating strategic reserves in Romania and Ukraine to ensure long-term energy security.
From Vulnerability to European Model
According to POLITICO, in April 2025, over one-third of Moldova’s electricity came from local renewable sources. The government has set the objective that, by 2030, at least 27% of total energy consumption and 30% of the electricity mix will be covered by green resources.
Digitalization, green transition, and regional partnerships have turned Moldova’s energy vulnerability into a strategic advantage recognized at the European level. The expertise and tangible results achieved position Moldova as a best-practice example in energy security, independence, and alignment with European standards.
Conclusion
The POLITICO article emphasizes that Moldova is not only overcoming energy challenges but also transforming them into opportunities for development and European integration. The model created by the Moldovan government demonstrates that a strategy based on diversification, transparency, and innovation can bring long-term benefits, strengthening both energy security and the country’s strategic position in Europe.
