Over 400 mayors discussed investments for localities undergoing voluntary amalgamation with the Government

More than 400 mayors from the Republic of Moldova participated, over the course of three days, in consultations organized by the Government on projects aimed at localities involved in the voluntary amalgamation process. The discussions focused on the investments needed to reduce disparities between communities and improve living conditions.

The consultations brought together mayors from the northern, central and southern regions, with the final meeting dedicated to local public authorities from the southern region.

Stronger local administrations

President Maia Sandu, who attended the meeting in the southern region, emphasized the importance of strong and efficient local administrations capable of attracting specialists, responding more effectively to citizens’ needs and focusing on development projects.

In this context, voluntary amalgamation is regarded as a tool for strengthening administrative capacity and ensuring more efficient use of resources available at the local level.

Priority: communities with the greatest needs

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, stated that all localities are important, but investments should primarily be directed towards areas with the most pressing needs.

According to the official, reducing disparities between localities requires joint efforts and closer cooperation between central authorities and local public administrations.

Funding comes with responsibilities

Secretary General of the Government, Alexei Buzu, pointed out that financial resources also come with requirements and responsibilities. He emphasized the need to identify the most effective ways of using available funds so that investments address the priorities established together with citizens.

Infrastructure remains a priority

Central authorities have highlighted the fact that many local administrations have limited budgets, which restricts their ability to invest in essential infrastructure and public services. Key needs include roads, water supply and sewerage networks, street lighting and waste management.

The situation is further compounded by the small size of many communities. More than 87% of local public administrations in the Republic of Moldova serve communities with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants.

In this context, strengthening local administration through voluntary amalgamation and ensuring more efficient allocation of resources are considered important for the balanced development of communities.
