Republic of Moldova Secures 12.5 Million Lei to Support Centres for Ukrainian Refugees

Temporary accommodation centres for Ukrainian refugees in the Republic of Moldova will receive additional funding of approximately 12.5 million lei.

The decision was approved by the Government through an amendment to the Cooperation and Financing Agreement between the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection (MLSP).

11 centres and approximately 630 refugees

According to Dumitru Pîslaru, State Secretary of the MLSP, the funding will support the operation of 11 temporary accommodation centres hosting approximately 630 Ukrainian refugees.

The non-reimbursable grant provided by the Red Cross is being increased by approximately 6 million lei, bringing the total value of the agreement for the current year to approximately 12.5 million lei.

Funding for operational expenses

The financial resources will be used to cover the expenses required for the operation of the centres, including utilities, staff costs, food and hygiene products.

The authorities note that the financial support will both help maintain the services provided to refugees and reduce the pressure on the state budget.

First tranche already transferred

The Republic of Moldova has already received the first tranche, amounting to CHF 300,000, equivalent to approximately 6.5 million lei. The remaining amount is expected to be transferred by the end of 2026.

The funding is provided under the project “Support for the Operation of Temporary Accommodation Centres for Refugees and Assistance During the Cold Season in the Republic of Moldova”.

Cooperation launched in 2023

The financial support represents a continuation of cooperation between the IFRC and the Republic of Moldova, launched in 2023 to support refugee accommodation centres.

During this period, in addition to the funds provided under the current agreement, the IFRC granted a total of CHF 2.5 million in funding.
