Republic of Moldova | The Tofan Government Places European Integration and Economic Growth at the Core of Its Governing Programme

The new Government of the Republic of Moldova, led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and invested following a vote of confidence by Parliament, begins its mandate with a clear objective: accelerating the country’s European integration process and delivering tangible results for citizens.

The Head of Government emphasized that European integration is the administration’s “top priority”, at a time when meeting the European Union accession timetable requires sustained reforms and decisive action.

According to the Prime Minister, the coming weeks will be crucial for fulfilling the Republic of Moldova’s commitments, and any delays could postpone key milestones in the country’s EU accession process.

Governance to Focus on Transparency and Accountable Decision-Making

Vasile Tofan stated that he intends to pursue a governing style based on open communication and the assumption of difficult decisions. He acknowledged the existence of major challenges, including pressure on the state budget, the need to increase salaries for certain categories of public sector employees, and the reassessment of fiscal measures.

The Prime Minister stressed that these issues will be addressed transparently, presenting both the benefits and the costs of every decision, while solutions will be discussed together with the government team and the parliamentary majority in the best interest of citizens.

Government Performance Will Be Measured by Results

The Prime Minister underlined that ministers’ performance will be the primary criterion for evaluating the Government’s activity. At this stage, changes to the composition of the Cabinet have been kept to a minimum in order to avoid disrupting key processes related to European integration.

However, Vasile Tofan stated that he will not hesitate to request changes within the Government if the expected results are not achieved, emphasizing that every day counts in meeting the deadlines established within the framework of relations with the European Union.

Why He Accepted the Position of Prime Minister

The Prime Minister explained that he accepted the nomination because he believes the experience he has gained should now be placed in the service of the public interest. He described the role as both a privilege and a responsibility toward the Republic of Moldova, stating that the time had come to contribute directly to the country’s development through public service.

No Major Reorganization of Ministries

During consultations on the formation of the new Cabinet, the Government examined the possibility of merging certain ministries. Following the assessment, it concluded that such restructuring would not generate significant budgetary savings but could negatively affect institutional operations and the implementation of ongoing reforms. Consequently, the Government’s structure has largely remained unchanged.

Parliamentary Support and Openness to Dialogue

Vasile Tofan thanked the deputies of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) for their vote of confidence and expressed his willingness to maintain constructive institutional cooperation with the opposition. He also rejected claims that conditions had been imposed before accepting the nomination, explaining that he took on the mandate because he shares the strategic vision promoted by the current parliamentary majority.

Tofan Government Confirmed After More Than Nine Hours of Parliamentary Debate

The Cabinet led by Vasile Tofan secured Parliament’s vote of confidence with the support of the 53 deputies of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), following a plenary session lasting more than nine hours. During the debate, the Prime Minister-designate presented the Government’s programme and answered lawmakers’ questions for more than five hours before representatives of all parliamentary groups delivered their statements.

The new Government’s programme focuses on accelerating economic growth, improving the efficiency of public administration, and advancing the Republic of Moldova’s European integration process.

Swearing-In Ceremony

Members of the new Government will take the oath of office on Wednesday, 22 July, during an official ceremony at the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova. The oath will be administered before President Maia Sandu, in the presence of Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, officially marking the beginning of the mandate of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.
