River Flows in Zakarpattia, Ukraine, Are Declining | Authorities Introduce a Brown Hydrological Alert Level

River Flows in Zakarpattia Forecast to Decline Further

In the first half of October, rivers in the Zakarpattia region could experience a further decline in flow rates, according to hydrological forecasts. The development is being monitored amid continued low water levels and flow rates across several rivers in the region.

The decline in river flows is particularly relevant for river basins where water levels are already low and available water reserves are limited. If this trend continues, it could increase pressure on water resources and on the region’s water management infrastructure.

Different Conditions Across the Main River Basins

In the basins of the Rika, Borzhava, Latoritsa and Uzh rivers, water levels and flow rates are forecast to remain well below the values associated with critical low-flow thresholds.

At the same time, in the basins of the Upper Tisza, Teresva and Terble rivers, the hydrological situation is expected to gradually approach the levels characteristic of periods with low flows. This development indicates a progressive reduction in available water resources in certain sections of the river network.

The differences between the river basins show that the intensity of the phenomenon is not uniform across the region. However, the overall trend points to the continuation of a hydrological situation characterized by low river flows.

Aquatic Vegetation Expands in Lowland Areas

The effects of declining river flows are already visible along some sections of rivers in the lowland areas of Zakarpattia. In certain riverbeds, an expansion of aquatic vegetation has been observed, a phenomenon associated with reduced water circulation and lower water volumes.

The development of vegetation in riverbeds may serve as an additional indicator of changing hydrological conditions and reduced natural river dynamics. Prolonged periods of low flows may, in certain areas, encourage vegetation growth and alter conditions within riverbeds.

Brown Hydrological Alert Level Introduced

Amid forecasts of a continued decline in river flows, a brown hydrological alert level has been introduced for rivers in the Zakarpattia region.

The measure reflects the deterioration of the hydrological situation and the need for close monitoring of changes in water levels and flow rates. In the coming period, data on the region’s main rivers will be important for assessing changes in its hydrological reserves.

Potential Effects on Water Management

Persistent low river flows may affect the operation of the water management system in Zakarpattia, particularly if the downward trend continues in the coming period.

Reduced available water resources may place additional pressure on the management of watercourses and on activities that depend on them. For this reason, hydrological developments are being continuously monitored, while persistently low water levels require increased attention to the management of water resources.

In this context, the coming weeks will be important for determining how the hydrological situation in Zakarpattia develops and for assessing the impact that declining river flows may have on the region’s water management system.
