Odesa to Mark Romanian Language Day with an Extensive Cultural and Institutional Programme

On 30 August 2026, the city of Odesa will host a series of events dedicated to Romanian Language Day, as part of a cultural, educational and institutional programme organised with the support of the Consulate General of Romania in Odesa.

The events take place in a significant context: in 2026, Romanian Language Day is being officially celebrated in Ukraine for the first time, following the establishment of 31 August as the official date by Decree No. 235/2026 of the President of Ukraine, issued on 12 March 2026.

Odesa, a Meeting Point for Romanian Communities

The programme will bring together representatives of local authorities, cultural and academic institutions, members of the Romanian community in the Odesa region, as well as delegations and partners from Romania.

The events will highlight the role of the Romanian language as part of cultural heritage and as a factor bringing together communities in Romania and Ukraine.

Commemoration and Tribute to Mihai Eminescu

The programme will begin in the morning with a commemoration ceremony for fallen heroes, held on the Alley of Heroes in Taras Shevchenko National Park in Odesa.

At 9:30 a.m., participants will lay flowers at the bust of Romania’s national poet, Mihai Eminescu, located at 31 Bazarna Street. Representatives of the Odesa municipal administration, delegations from Iași and Constanța, representatives of the Consulate General of Romania and members of the Romanian community are expected to attend the ceremony.

“The Word That Unites Us” – Promoting the Romanian Language through Education

At 10:00 a.m., the Odesa National Scientific Library will host the official opening of the programme.

One of the main events will be the international online connection “Odesa – Iași – Constanța”, followed by the International Dictation Constanța – Odesa – Iași “The Word That Unites Us”.

Through the Zoom platform, the event will bring together representatives of the Romanian communities in Ukraine and Romania, public authorities and institutions, members of the academic, educational and cultural sectors, teachers, young people and cultural figures.

Romanian Literature Presented in Odesa

The programme will continue with a guided tour of the Romanian literature exhibition organised at the Odesa National Scientific Library.

The exhibition will feature publications dedicated to Romanian literary and cultural heritage, contributing to the promotion of Romanian cultural values and the Romanian language.

Odesa and Iași Strengthen Cooperation

At 12:00 p.m., the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre will host the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the municipalities of Odesa and Iași.

The agreement marks a new step in developing relations between the two local administrations and strengthening regional cooperation. The ceremony will be followed by official speeches, an exchange of gifts and a group photograph.

Constanța Supports Public Transport in Odesa

At 12:45 p.m., the Municipality of Constanța will officially hand over buses to the Municipality of Odesa, marking a new stage in cooperation between the two local administrations.

The initiative is part of the support and partnership relations developed between Constanța and Odesa.

Performance Dedicated to the Romanian Language and Culture

From 3:00 p.m., the programme will continue with a festive performance at the Premier Hotel in Odesa.

Artistic groups from the Odesa region and Romania will present musical and artistic performances dedicated to the Romanian language, culture and traditions.

An Event at the Intersection of Culture and Cooperation

The events in Odesa are part of a broader effort to strengthen intercultural dialogue, institutional cooperation and relations between Romania and Ukraine.

By combining cultural and educational activities with administrative cooperation initiatives, the programme provides a platform for bringing institutions and communities from the two countries closer together.
