Romania is experiencing high gas flows! Domestic production is at full capacity, as are exports to the Republic of Moldova.

Large volumes of gas are transiting through Romania with the official start of the gas heating season (November 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026). Transit through the country remains at a high level, with a notable flow toward Ukraine – 1 million cubic meters – in addition to the 5 million cubic meters reaching Hungary.

In both directions, this represents a secured gas transit for consumers in Hungary and Ukraine, with Romania acting as a “hub” for delivering gas to customers in neighboring countries via the Turkey-Bulgaria route (for Budapest) and the Greece-Bulgaria route (for Kyiv).

The most recently operationalized route targets Ukraine. This involves LNG unloaded from tankers at terminals in the Mediterranean, transported along the Vertical Corridor to Romania and then onward to Ukraine. It is the newest gas transport route in Eastern Europe, strongly supported by the US and the EU as an alternative to Russian gas.

So far, however, only small, sporadic amounts of gas have passed through this route, as major traders have been reluctant to purchase and transport a product that is more expensive than Russian gas and faces intermittent demand, especially from Ukraine.

Due to the ongoing war, industrial and even household consumption is unpredictable. This lack of predictability makes it difficult to conclude long-term contracts with large volumes.

Currently, Ukraine is primarily supplied through Poland, after having completely phased out Russian gas at the beginning of this year. The North-South Corridor passing through Romania could serve as an alternative source of supply for Ukraine.

Regarding exports to the Republic of Moldova, gas is currently flowing at the maximum capacity of the Iași-Ungheni interconnector – 5.4 million cubic meters per day.

Domestic production is also at peak levels, at 24.2 million cubic meters, and gas storage facilities are full to capacity. Extraction from stored gas has begun, currently in small quantities, slightly over 2 million cubic meters.
