Romanian Language Day Officially Marked in Odesa

Romanian Language Day was marked in Odesa through commemorative events and a wreath-laying ceremony, in the context of the first official, state-level celebration of this day in Ukraine.

The events were attended by the Acting Consul of Romania in Odesa, Claudiu Tătaru, together with representatives of the local authorities and the Romanian community.

Tribute to Fallen Heroes and Mihai Eminescu

The events began with a commemoration of fallen heroes, held on the Heroes’ Alley in Taras Shevchenko Park in Odesa.

Subsequently, Claudiu Tătaru, together with representatives of the Odesa municipal administration and members of the Romanian community, laid flowers at the bust of poet Mihai Eminescu, located at 31 Bazarna Street.

First Official Celebration of Romanian Language Day in Ukraine

The events took place in the context of Romanian Language Day being officially celebrated in Ukraine for the first time, following the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to recognize the day at the state level.

In his message on the occasion, the Acting Consul of Romania in Odesa welcomed the decision of the Ukrainian authorities and the openness of the municipal administration to organizing events dedicated to the Romanian language.

Claudiu Tătaru emphasized that this official recognition holds particular significance for Romania and for the Romanian community in Ukraine.

Historical Communities, an Asset for Romanian-Ukrainian Relations

A central element of the Romanian diplomat’s message focused on the role of historical communities in strengthening relations between Romania and Ukraine.

Through their knowledge of the languages, cultures and societies of both countries, these communities can directly contribute to bringing Romania and Ukraine closer together and strengthening bilateral relations.

Respect for the Mother Tongue, Essential for Preserving Identity

Claudiu Tătaru also highlighted the importance of respecting communities’ right to preserve their language, traditions and culture.

According to the diplomat, the ability to preserve and pass on one’s mother tongue contributes to protecting the identity of communities and strengthening mutual respect between them.

Culture and Identity, Important for Ukraine’s Future

The Acting Consul noted that the marking of Romanian Language Day carries particular significance in the context of the war in Ukraine.

The fact that, under these circumstances, attention continues to be paid to culture, education and linguistic identity is, in the diplomat’s view, an important indicator of the kind of society Ukraine aims to build after the war.

Romania Reaffirms Its Support for Ukraine

Concluding his message, Claudiu Tătaru reaffirmed Romania’s support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of developing relations between institutions, cities and communities.

The diplomat emphasized that, particularly in Odesa, the growing closeness between the two countries can be transformed into increasingly strong and natural cooperation at the institutional and community levels.

The message concluded with the greeting “Happy Romanian Language Day!” and the phrase “Glory to Ukraine!”.
